Why Wind Energy
There are several reasons why wind is an optimum source of energy:
- Wind is an unlimited resource.
- Wind power is totally clean; there are absolutely no pollutants or contamination from its use.
- Wind power is cost effective when compared to other forms of energy generation.
- Wind power is self-sufficient. No foreign countries are needed.
- Wind power generates large volumes of electrical power in a short period of time.
- Wind power reduces emissions of greenhouse gases - and conforms to the Kyoto Protocol for positive carbon dioxide processes.
Evidence of Windmills dates back to China and Egypt in 500 B.C., and England in the 12th Century. Windmills were used during the early years of discovery in the United States for water pumping and ranching in the vast areas of North America. Windmills are a familiar site to Americans, for many years a fixture to the landscape of rural America.
Today's windmills are mainly used for energy generation, made from a combination of materials to prohibit rust and increase size without added weight. The electricity generated is transferred through electric cables to a nearby electric grid. The grid then takes the wind energy to homes and businesses for consumption.
