Overview - Safety

Power from the wind is a very safe form of energy. The turbines are manufactured by experts with decades of manufacturing expertise with the latest technological advances in construction and installed by competent crews. The windmill's components are made with space-age technology that is nearly impervious to wear and tear. Offshore wind farms are especially safe because the wind turbulence in water is much lower than on land.

The turbines are monitored 24 hours a day and are serviced regularly. A windmill's brain, or nacelle as it is called, contains the gears and generator. It also monitors the temperature of the generator, wind speed, and vibrations. If there is a problem it will shut down automatically and alert the monitoring center. The turbines have fail-safe overspeed protection systems that stop the blades from rotating in the event of system failure. The blades will rotate, or feather against the wind to use the natural resistance of the wind with mechanical braking to stop spinning.
